How do i get a job voluntering [sp*] at an animal shelter?

im 15 and i need to get out of the house a bit. And i was thinking why not get a job? I love animals so id really like to get a job at a animal shelter. maybe with my cousin who has done it when she was younger.

How do i go about getting this job? Should i go in with my cousin if she agrees to do it with me?

What do i say?

And what jobs are available that i could do?

How do i get a job voluntering [sp*] at an animal shelter?
Go to the animal shelter and ask them. Tuck in your shirt, be sure your shoes are tidy, and go right in. This will show them that you know how to get there and that you have initiative. When you get there, tell them your cousin (remind them of her name) used to work there.

It is likely that they have restrictions on employees or volunteers who are under 18, because of insurance and legal liability. If they can work thru that, the jobs you can do are cleaning cages, emptying trash, feeding dogs, walking dogs, answering the phone, filing...

If they seem like they might take you, then when you get home call your cousin and ask her will she phone them and put in a good word for you.
Reply:Check out each shelter in your area, then go to them personally and take a look at them, then talk to them in person and let them know you want to volunteer, this is what I did and have been at the same shelter for 9 years now...

I love it, and by the way, in person is the best way to do it, they will have you fill out a questionnaire about you and dogs, and fill it out completely and honestly, they seem to know if you are not telling the truth, by the way you handle yourself around dogs........

I was contacted 2 days later and have been there ever since.

it is a great feeling to help dogs that need help, we need more volunteers all the time due to the growing number of poor dogs brought in.....

and thanks for caring and wanting to help...good luck

and I will warn you, you will want to take them all home, its that is the only hazard about the job......
Reply:Offer to volunteer unless there is a paid opening. Offer to clean, walk dogs, clean, do laundry, clean, pet cats, clean, feed animals, clean, do paperwork, and did I mention clean. If you and your cousin can actually work together and accomplish something, then take her with you. Expect to have your parents sign a release should you be asked on. Good luck.
Reply:You can look on a local shelter's website. They usually have info online about volunteering and sometimes even the application. If not there will be a number to call them. If you want a paid job, call the shelter or look for job info on the website. Or you can just go over and ask if they're hiring and to fill out an application. Just let them know what you are interested in doing. For volunteering, you can cuddle cats and kittens/play with them, walk, socialize, and train dogs, office work, etc... pretty much any facet of operating an animal shelter, they will need help with. You may need experience for some positions, however. Good luck!
Reply:Usually, shelter positions are volunteer.

You'll need an adult to do it with you. They have to stay with you too. They can't wait in the car or read a book or anything.

Call over to the shelter and ask. They'll be happy to tell you all about it. Better yet, go on the website.

As to what you'll be doing?

Anything that interests you. All the shelters I've volunteered at want you to do what you like best. I trained the dogs, but my friend is good at (and likes, if you can believe it!) paper work. She would do office work, and I'd walk dogs.

Tasks that always need doing at a shelter:

~Poop patrol. There's a never ending supply of poop. LOL!

~Laundry. Again, never ending supply.

~Socialization and training. Spending time with the animals. Show them people are fun and great. Get them out of the cages for a little while. Training makes dogs more adoptable.

~Grooming. Clean, pretty dogs get adopted faster.

~Stuffing envelopes, updating the website, general office work.

~Public education

The list is endless.

It's really worthwhile.
Reply:you USUALLY can't get a job like that at many places until your over 18.

Some animal shelters will allow you to work with a adult..but most are volunteering.

Animal shelters aren't always as cool as they sound..i would just like to warn you! it may sound like you get to play with puppies all day...but it's not that...so just a warning

search for animal shelters on google...when you find them they SHOULD tell you how old you have to be to work there
Reply:basically call them and ask to speak to the director. tell them about yourself and what you are looking to do and ask if they have anything that you could do.
