Im sorry if I sound stupid, I really dont know much about computers. Please help!
Can you use a Dell Windows xp and sp start up disc for a Sony vaio computer?
No question is stupid.
No unfortunately you can't. Each vendor has a scheme to keep their recovery or startup CD's from being used on other machines. There are some was around that but now your into hacking.

Reply:NO they have there own code that prevents that
Reply:Yes you should be able to use your Windows XP on the Sony vaio. Your XP CD is not keyed to your motherboard, the key located on side of your case will work. Only use the Windows XP cd to install your Windows. Don't use a seperate disk with dell drivers on it. Windows XP will contain generic drivers that will start you off. You may need to burn a CD with drivers for your network card so you can get on the net and go to Windows update and get the service packs installed along with any other drivers you may need such as video device drivers and other drivers. See if your Sony vaio comes with it's own driver cd. You should be able to just insert your Windows XP cd in the cdrom drive and turn on the Sony vaio. Windows XP setup should boot automatically.
Microsoft's oem policy states that your Windows XP can only be used on Dell products, but they do make exceptions if you have any problems registering your Windows XP with your key. There has been cases where people have installed XP on other hardware, called Microsoft and explained what they did and Microsoft gave them a new key to use. But I don't think you will have any problems. Remember that you can't use Windows XP on two computers at the same time.
Don't expect to get any support from Dell or Microsoft if you run into problems. This task isn't for a newbie, so you'll want to get someone that knows what they're doing.
